After a bumpy stop-start planning phase, I am nearly ready to write Danny3.

The notes are extensive. I have a working title. The step treatment is done. Pencils are sharpened. Typing fingers, all two of them, are beginning to twitch.

But starting the sequel to The Wreck Of The Margherita and Death Squad is a scary prospect.

It’s committing to months of solitary toil that dominates your waking and sleeping thoughts.

It’s like planning a jungle trek into unknown territory.

How long will it take?

Will the going be even or rough?

Have I got the navigation correct?

Do I have the right kit?

Has my planning covered all the possibilites I can imagine?

What do I do when the unimagined happens?

It is a major leap of faith with no guaranteed happy end in sight.

It’s an adventure. I shall be packing the mental equivalent of spare undies and extra sandwiches.

NORSES FOR COURSES: I love the little tidbits, the new perspectives, you pick up on travel trips. In Norway I found out that the lovely city of Bergen was founded in 1170 by King Olav the Peaceful.

This struck me as an unusual moniker for a Viking. I was under the impression spreading death and terror was part of the job description.

Olav was the son of Harald Hardrada who was defeated at the Battle of Stamford Bridge by Harold of England just before Harold had his optical mishap at Hastings.

Hardrada means “The Hard” which again set me wondering.

What would a Viking have to do to be rated “hard” by his pillaging peers?

A HORSE?: Archaeologists have found the remains of King Richard III in a car park in Leicester … but no horse.
