Trying to stay cheerful while someone sticks a telescope up your bum is a challenge.

Guys don’t like being fiddled with below the waist unless it’s for recreational purposes.

But I’ve just lost a 60-year-old friend to bowel cancer so I think it’s worth biting the bullet and getting checked if you have any worries.

The wear and tear of passing years isn’t confined to the outside. And time is important. Delay can be lethal.

I’ve just been checked. Can’t say it was fun. I never saw the bendy telescope, known as a sigmoidoscope, but I kept thinking “baseball bat”.

A smiling nurse gripped my arm as I wriggled and squealed. Some experiences get the firmest of stiff upper lips flapping like laundry.

The good news is that it’s uncomfortable rather than painful and only takes a minute or two.

Getting the all-clear gives you a surprising buzz. One less thing to worry about.

It’s not a dignified process but the medical people are sensitive.

And it’s a lot better than the alternative.

Kajaki – A Modern British War Film is the true story of British soldiers and a rescue mission in an Afghan minefield. It deserves to be made. The film is being crowd-funded and there’s only five days left to hit target. If you chip in you could get you name on the credits. Really chuffed with another 5* review for ROCK HARD: “Having read the three previous Danny Lancaster action-packed thrillers and enjoyed them all immensely, there is always an element of fear that another instalment might be disappointing. No worries on this score – this lived up to and exceeded expectations. Yet again the writing and descriptions immerse you from the first page and I could not put this down. A gripping, thrilling, entertaining and violent trip to Gibraltar for my hero, Danny, with an exploding climax that leaves you wondering. The descriptive writing about Gibraltar makes you feel you actually know the area even if you have not been there. Always difficult to write a review for this type of book without giving anything away. I would recommend to anyone, not just to those who read this genre, as it has a lot more to offer besides. Loved it!”

My cousin Barbara might have become the RAF’s first female pilot if she had not been killed on a training flight. Read her story at: www.barbaragubbins.co.uk
