I like a good Scotch egg but they are being highjacked by trendy cheffery.

A good Scotch egg needs the right ratio of moist meat to egg with a light dusting of breadcrumbs. It’s all about proportion.

They make a good snack or a light meal. Wrapped in foil, they’ll fit in a pocket.

But the mutant interlopers look more like rusted cannonballs hauled off the seabed, big ugly things with lumpy bumpy encrustations, weird eggs and inappropriate meats.

A good egg and bacon sandwich, regardless of your usual preference, HAS to be eaten with sticky tasteless Mother’s Pride-style bread.

Likewise, the humble Scotch egg is a simple snack, not a Masterchef Twitter trend.

Leave them alone!

IT’S a month since the launch of Latest TV, Brighton’s own telly channel, and I’m enjoying it. Sound levels wander and production is shaky but it gives it that so-bad-it’s-brilliant feel. And the channel has an energy and enthusiasm that carries way beyond the maximum stretch of its shoestring budget. There’s a lot of potential. As Latest TV builds audience and advertising the sky’s the limit.

I MET Oxo Mum Lynda Bellingham once at a cast, crew and press screening of Confessions Of A Driving Instructor at Barnet Odeon. I was a kid reporter from the local rag. She was a lovely fizzy person, twinkling eyes, bubbling with life. She squeezed my knee as the lights went down. My first brush with showbiz. I treasure the memory. And I admire her courage, hope she enjoys whatever time she has.

BEEN staying up very late reading The Ways Of The World, Robert Goddard’s first thriller featuring WWI pilot James Maxted. Paris in Goddard - Maxted2 1919 is a hotbed of intrigue as it hosts the peace conference. When Maxted arrives to probe his father’s death he finds it just as deadly as the skies over the trenches. The action swoops and soars across a richly-drawn setting. Can’t wait to take off with book 2.
