Ephemera Shop - SOf all the words subjected to modern abuse the one that really annoys me is “professional”.

Is anyone in need of medical help going to look for a “healthcare amateur”?

When your laptop crashes are you going to consult an “IT amateur”?

If you want skilled help it doesn’t seem unreasonable to expect the supplier to be capable in their chosen field. Creating labels proves nothing.

And don’t get me started on “alarmed door”.

This week is the 50th anniversary of the London premiere of Zulu. It’s historically dodgy but a cracking film packed with memorable lines.

Colour Sergeant Bourne: “It’s a miracle.”

Lieutenant Chard: “If it’s a miracle, Colour Sergeant, it’s a short chamber Boxer Henry point 45 caliber miracle.”

Colour Sergeant Bourne: “And a bayonet, sir, with some guts behind.”

Lieutenant Bromhead: “Front rank fire! Rear rank fire!”

Chard: “I came up here to build a bridge.”
